Saint Mary’s is located on Cromford Road ,Crich near Matlock, Derbyshire, DE45DJ, United Kingdom.  It was originally built around 1135.  The original Norman structure of Saint Mary’s in Crich was erected under the direction of Ralph Fitz-Hubert (the first Baron of Crich) or his successor Ralph Fitz- Ralph, during the reign of King Stephen between 1135 and 1154

     Because medieval churches were built and expanded over centuries rather than by.a single.builder, key.figures responsible for different historical phases of the building include

     The Original Founders.(1125–1154):  the local Norman lords Ralph Fitz –Hubert and Ralph.Fitz–Ralph iniated earliest surviving construction, which includes the Norman nave and the north arcade pillars.

     14th Century Expander (1300s): Sir William de Wakebridge, a prominent local knight, funded massive Gothic– style expansions.  His benevolence added the chance!, tower,spire and tne chantry.chapel

     19th and 20th Century Restorers:

The Church was heavily restored in 1861 by prominent Victorian architect Benjamin Ferrey and later repaired by the architecture firm Currey and Thompson

Key Architectural Styles

     Norman (1135–1140) The oldest surving.parts of the interior are the Norman Arcades. The North Arrcade dates to.1135 and the South Arcade shortly after.  They feature characteristic.heavy stone  work and round arches.

     Incorporated Gothic 1325–1350)  The Church underwent a major rebuilding phase in the 14th century.  The Chancellor windows, show case intricate obee reticulated stone tracery.

     Perpendicular  Gothic (C1400). The upper portion of the naive walls was raised to add a clerk story during this phase.

     The flatheaded, 3 light cleristory windows, the ashlar crenallated parapets, and the south porch all display this late medieval style
