Townsend House Built in 1895 James and Sallie Townsend were the first black residents of Clermont Florida. They moved there from Georgia in 1887. They were local leaders in Clermont in education, religion, and community health. The Townsends ran a small store near their home. They were one of the founders of Saint Mark A.M.E. church. This is still operating today.The Townsends founded a school for black.children in Clermont.
Townsend House Sallie worked as a midwife and assisted at the birth of over one thousand infants. In 1941, she opened a maternity home for black women.
Townsend House The Townsend House was a 2 story white building constructed around 1895. It was moved from its original location to the Clermont Historic Village in 2002. It has been opened to the public since 2005.
