Amazon Building

Amazon Hosiery Knitting Mill is a former industrial building located at 530–550 Western Ave in Muskegon, Mi. The logging industry was winding down in the late 1800’s.  The leading entrepreneurs were attempting to find a replacement.

In 1895, George Powell from Michigan City, IN agreed to move his company Amazon Hosiery to Muskegon. In that same yeat, he built a one story l shaped  structure.

Unfortunately, his company struggled.  In 1897, lumbar barons Charles Hackley and Thomas Humes bought a controlling interest in the business.

The company was reorganized and renamed as Amazon Knitting Mill.  In 1899, the original building was demolished.   A new 4 story u shaped plant was built with two towers.  The plant operated into the 1940’s.  It closed from 1943 to 1945.  A series of businesses occupied the plant.

Eventually, the plant was converted to apartments and commercial space
