     The Grayland Theater was located at 3940 N. Cicero Avenue, Chicago.  It was built in 1909 and opened as a theater in 1912. It as a small single screen theater with seating for 299 patrons.  It showed silent films with live organ accompaniment.

     The architect was William  Ohlhaber.  The exterior facade was brick and architectural terra cotta.  This was common in the early 1900’s.  The original owner was Samuel Wertheimer.  He owned the theater until 1926.  He sold it to Albert Schmidt for 4,000.

  There was an unfortunate incident at the theater on October 26, 1926.    At this time Schmidt lured Wertheimer in the basement of Grayland at shot him twice.   After that, Schmidt committed suicide.

     The story was that Schmidt was unhappy with the revenues of the theater.

     The theater closed in 1929.  The Rasenick Work wear Store store first opened in the old Gray land Theater building in 1972.  The historical records are incomplete as to who operated in the building between 1929 to 1972.

     The building is currently used by Rasenick’s Workwear, a  retail  long running family owned business.  It is currently run by  Joanne and Richard Buckwalter.

Rivoli Theater Chicago, Il

This theater is located at 4380 Elston Avenue Chicago. It opened in March 31, 2023. The architect was Edward G. McClellan.   The builder was Howell Knox. The building style is classical..  There is a single screen.  The capacity was 1302 seats. The theater closed in December,1949s

     There are a series of large arched window bays along upper levels. The facade was constructed using traditional Chicago common brick accented by bonding patterns.

     During theater operation (1923 to 1949), there was a central illuminated marquee above the main entrance on Elston Avenue.

Rivoli Theatre Chicago

       After the theater closed ,the building was repurposed as the Rivioli Ballroom in 1950. The Rivoli Ballroom transformation was part of a broader  trend in the mid 20th century Chicago where former theaters were repurposed for social and entertainment events.    During the 1950’s to 1960’s the building operated as the Rivoli Ballroom and later Antoines’s Ballroom and Banquets.  Follow its use as a banquet hall, it was used as a warehouse/storage facility.  This occurred until the 1980’s.

Riverview High School Sarasota, Fl.

Paul Rudolph version of the Riverside High School Sarasota, Fl

     Riverview High School in Sarasota was built in 1958.  It was officially dedicated on 02/08/1959.  It was the first public building designed by Paul Rudolph.  He was an internationally respected architect.  Riverview High School was one of the most progressive schools of its day.

     The buildings were arranged in a U shape creating an open plaza in the center.  A distinctive free standing covered  parkway of horizontal plain completed the square on a the fourth side. This configuration  ensured students were always protected from sun and rain.  The schol.had 25 classrooms, a cafeteria, gymnasium,  library,  2 shops, 2 home economic rooms, 2 music rooms, offices for the staff.

     The plan included a planetarium.    The building style was internationalist.    It included modern steel and glass among native pine trees.

     The 2 story classroom buildings were designed with generous corridors open at both ends to insure cross breeze.

Paul Rudolph version of Riverside High School Sarasota Florida

     Paul Rudolph incorporated passive ventilation, day lighting and shading in his plan for the school.  The building was  never designed to work with air conditioning.  Use of air conditioning led to problems with mold.  Inappropriate alterations in the last few.decades as well as poor maintenance led to high restoration costs.  In 2009, the school board voted to demolish the Rudolph Building.  It was converted to a parking lot.

     Architect Richard Price  was tasked with the project to replace the Paul Rudolph building in 2009.  The general contractor was W.G. Mills.  Electrical Contractor was NCN Electric.  Fire alarm Contractor was Commercial Electric Systems.

     The new school was 53200 square feet. The traditional design centered around an expansive interior court yard . Project included a large auditorium Riverview Performance Art Center.

     Include in the project were 72 classrooms for English, Math, Social Studies, World Languages.  Average classroom size is 860 square feet..  There was one day care facility ( 11370 square feet).  There were 19 Science Classrooms ( 1,320 square feet).  There were 12 rooms for Career and Technical Education (1315 square feet)

     There were 5 Art Classroom; 7 Music Classrooms; 2 Drama Classrooms, 2 Junior ROTC Classrooms, 6 exceptional Classrooms; One English for speakers of other languages classroom; 1 newspaper and English Classroom; 1 Yearbook and English Classroom;5 Physical Education Classrooms; one gymnastium with seating for 2,200.

Point O’ Palms

     This house is located at 201 Sunset Drive Nokomis, Fl.  It was built by Dr Fred Albee and his wife Louella.  It was built in 1923. The architects were Dr. Fred and Loyola Albee.

     It is a two story Mediterranean Revival house.  The external facade is stucco and it is symmetrical.   There is a clay tile roof.  There are multiple arched openings.

     .Description from a real estate advertisement is :3 stories, living area is 6371 square feet. There are 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.  Unfortunately, the house exhibits signs of neglect.

     This building is located  on 801 South Tamiami Trail, Nakomis.  It was completed in 1925.  This building is a 2 story wood frame building with a stucco exterior. The foundation is concrete slab.   The roof is gabled with barrel clay tiles. There are Roman arched windows.

 Architect was Thomas Reed Martin.  The architecture was the Mizner Style. This is known for its waterfront views and Mediterranean inspired design.

     This building was the first bank and post office in Sarasota County. The bank was at this building from 1925-1927.. The post office was at the building for four decades. 

     It  also housed the  Komsee Inn beginning in the mid  1930’s. to the mid 1940’s.. There were likely five guest rooms all on the second floor.

Pollyanna Inn Nokomis

     The Inn was a prominentearly luxury inn built in 1922. It was the site of an old turpentine camp stockade.  It was located on Dona Bay.

     The architect was Thomas Reed Martin..It was built for Doctor Albee and his cousin in law Ellis Nash.  It was constructed by William.Fletcher Rigby.  The first hotel manager was Alexander Lightfoot. Initially, the hotel had35 rooms

     Ultimately, the inn had 92 rooms. Architectural.style was Spanish Italian.  The building was 3 stories. The walls were block.walls.and steel columns covered by white stucco.

     The name was changed to Villa Nokomis due the development and expansion of  the area by.Doctor Albee.

     In 1939, the Villa Nokomis was sold to the Cardinal Family for $10.  This purchase was part of their development in the Nokomis area.  The name was changed to Cardinal ‘s Villa Nokomis.  The inn was closed in 1968 because of decreased revenues and increased competition.  The building demolished in 1971.

     This house was built in 1908. It has 3 bedrooms and one and I nd 1/2 baths.   It has 166 square feet of living space. It sits on a 1.2 acre lot. Most of the house was built with heart of pine.  It was built a by Claude Curry and his wife Mabel.  

     Claude was born in Bradenton,Manatee County, Florida.  His family relocated to the Nokomis area when he was 3. His wife Mabel Alice Wilson Curry was born in Florida.  Claude and Mabel were married in Nokomis in 1908.   They had 10 children
The Curry family was part of the earlier settlers in the Nokomis region.  Claude T. Curry was involved with the early post office in Nokomis. He ran the post office in his home.    Construction material was predominantly pine.
