Sculpture “And You Seas”, near the mouth of the Saint Joseph River, Michigan

        And You Seas is a soaring public sculpture located at the mouth of the Saint Joseph River where it meets Lake Michigan in Saint Joseph, Michigan.
Quick facts about the sculpture
      The artist: Created in 2002 by the world renowned abstract American sculptor Richard Hunt
    Dimensions: roughly 50 to 55 feet tall and is crafted from 8 tons of welded stainless steel.
     Location: Situated at the north end of Silver Beach County Park right along the South Pier
     Purpose: Commissioned through the KrasilArt center as a memorial to Patrick J. Kinney, an avid sailor and former board president of the art center.
Symbolic Design Elements
Richard Hunt incorporated specific nautical themes into the abstract metal work to honor Kinney’s maritime passion:
     The Base: features stylized sweeping curves that mimic cresting waves and rippling water.
     The column: The tower mimics the vertical form of the nearby historic St. Joseph Lighthouses
      The peak: abstracted shapes at the very top evoke soaring seagulls and and fish.
     The inscription: Hidden on the side is the text “D63”, which was Patrick Kinney  actual sail number
     The name: The title originates from a 1951 poem by Saints John Perse, A French Surrealist poet and Nobel Prize winner, expressing a deep love of the sea.

Historical Marker Michigan City

This is historical plaque for Anita King (Anna Keppen). She was born in Michigan City, Indiana. She was orphaned by age 14. Anita went on to become one of the first female race car drivers. She then turnedto to a career as a silent movie actress. Smith’s career took off when she became the first women  to drive alone  across the continental United States.  Her only companions for the drive were a rifle and a six shooter.After she retired from the movie industry,Anita began breeding race horses and started a safehouse for young women in LA.. Despite facing doubt, discrimination and other hardships, she never let anything stand in the way of her goals. She is honered here because Anita herself is a symbol of courage, determination and feminine strength. May she  inspire kindness and determination every day

Saint Joseph Swing Bridge

The Saint Joseph Swing bridge allows for passage of maritime and rail commerce. The bridge opens for vessels to cross. It closes for railroad passage. The current bridge was built in In 1904. There were 2 prior bridges at this site. The current bridge is 231 feet long and weights 200 tons. It was designed to provide maritime and train passage. This bridge is still in use. It is owned and maintained by CSX.
