The little Red Lighthouse is currently located under the George Washington Bridge Manhattan side. It was originally built in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It was later moved by the Coast Guard in 1921 to guide river traffic from shoals at Jeffrey Hook
In 1942 it became a legend as a result of the book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Grey Bridge by Hildegarde Swift.
The lighthouse became obsolete when the navigation lights were moved to the bridge in 1948.
The Lighthouse was saved from the auction block and put under the jurisdiction of the Parks Department in 1951.
