Richard Wood Memorial Bridge

     Richard  Wood Memorial Bridge (originally Lady’s Island Bridge) is a movable swing bridge that connects downtown Beaufort with Lady’s Island and outer sea Islands.  In 1971 it was renamed in memory of Richard Woods,aSouth Carolina highway patrolman killed in the line of duty.

     This bridge opened in 1959, replacing an earlier swing bridge built in 1927.  It carries 4 lanes of US21.  It crosses the Beaufort River (Intracoastal Waterway.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 1/6/2023.
