Probably the most famous monument in Michigan City, Indiana is the historic Civil War monument. It was erected in 1893. It is located in the median at the intersection of Lake Shore Drive and Franklin Street.

It is 65 feet tall. It is made of Vermont granite. It is topped with a bronze figure of Victorious Peace .

This building was constructed in 1927. It is a prominent landmark in Sawyer, Michigan. It was built for John Flynn, a colorful character in the Chicago Teamster Union. It was alleged was also a member of the Chicago mob Original Mister Flynn originally opened a tea room and restaurant in the building (Palm Tea Room and Flynn Soda Grill) Flynn opened the Flynn theater in the building. It offered live entertainment and movies. The Legacy . The theater did not last long. The Soda Fountain remained remained a central town fixture for decades .

Historic Plague

The building at this address is one of the oldest commercial buildings in New Buffalo, MI. It was built by Frederick Gerdes in 1871. He operated a grocery store at this location until his death in 1914.

. Between 1920 and 1936, the building was Rymal’s Plumbing Shop. Space was also provided for Winfield Redding’s real estate office and Martin Littlejohn’s office, where he kept kept the books for New Buffalo Savings and Loan Bank

     The first settlement was in April,1835.  The first four settlers were Wessel Whittaker, Henry Bishop, Truman Clough, and William Hammond     The first log house was built early in 1835 and occupied by the above named for two to three months. Their beds consisted of the tops of pine trees laid across one side of the log building. Captain Whittaker occupied position number 1,while Henry occupied number 2.  They were favored with a buffalo robe and a comforter, while the traveler  only had what nature had furnished for his share of the bed, unless he carried it with him.

Saint John United Church of Christ

     Now called Saint John’s United Church of Christ, this religious group.organized  in 1858 by Reverend Charles Haas of Michigan City, IN as the German Evangelical Church. Their building was completed in 1862–1863 and was built across Buffalo Street on the site of Pokorney’s Hardware.  The building was moved to.its present site in 1890.  The church has been modernized greatly over the years, including the additional of an annex , which was the little German School on the old parsonage grounds.
